ABOUT THE EMBASSY
Greetings from Ambassador Kinichi KOMANO

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the website of the Japanese Embassy in Ethiopia.

May I say a few words as an introduction to the visitors of this website.

Ethiopia is embracing its millennium this year. And Japan is hosting TICAD Ⅳ (Tokyo International Conference on African Development) and the G8 Summit next year. On these occasions in Japan, African development will be one of the major issues if not the main issue to be addressed. Japan is making genuine efforts to make both occasions meaningful and substantial for advancing African development. Therefore, we believe that the coming one year will be crucial for making the existing friendly relations broader and deeper between our two nations, just as the Ethiopian people are firmly determined to use the occasion of their millennium to lay the foundation for real development of the country.

We, the Japanese community in Ethiopia, while celebrating this auspicious occasion with all Ethiopian people, are keenly anticipating to actively joining in a wide variety of events and programs in order to achieve the set goals. On our part, we have organized not only cultural programs but also agreed with the Government of Ethiopia to jointly work for the scaling up of our development cooperation programs to Ethiopia by focusing on transferring Japan‘s experience, skill and technology to the Ethiopians, thus making Ethiopia a model of Japan's development cooperation in Africa. Our input to the above-mentioned two international conferences to be held in Japan next year will reflect this plan for our cooperation.

On cultural exchanges、 we plan not only to introduce our traditional and modern cultures but also to make them accessible for the Ethiopian people for their own purposes. With this in mind, we are organizing demonstrations of, among other things, martial arts like "Judo" and "Kendo" as the means for strengthening physical as well as mental power of the youth, and "Ikebana" (flower arrangement) for Ethiopian women who are fascinated to enjoy the beautiful roses cultivated in Ethiopia (for the time being, they are available only for the export purpose) in their houses, thus further boosting the floriculture industry in this country.

There are many other ideas to make the coming year really meaningful in terms of Ethiopian development and strengthening bi-lateral relations in all aspects between both countries. Let’s work together so that the coming year will be remembered by all of us as the watershed year for Ethiopia and the relations between our two peoples.
