JAPAN SUPPORTS EXPANSION OF SECONDARY EDUCATION IN GODE, SOMALI REGION
An Inauguration ceremony for a project for expanding the Gode Secondary and Preparatory School, Gode Kebele, Gode Woreda, Somali Regional State funded through the Japanese Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) with USD87,552 took place in Gode on Wednesday 10 November 2010.

Mr. Yoshiaki Ito, Minister and Deputy-Head of Mission of the Embassy of Japan, and Mr. Yutaka Onozato, Second Secretary in the Consular and Security Division of the Embassy of Japan, celebrated the completion of the school buildings, together with representatives of the Somali Region, Gode Town, as well as members of the community.

This Project was implemented by the Association Develop Horn (AD Horn), which was established in 2005, and is working in the Somali Region. Through AD Horn, the Embassy of Japan supported the construction of two school blocks, one dry latrine, a school fence, and gate, and the provision of combined desks and chairs for students. The Gode Secondary School in the only secondary and preparatory school from G9 to G12 in Gode Woreda, even though there are around 100 primary schools. This expansion of school blocks targeted decreasing the number of students in each class from 83 to 60, and increasing the total number of students in school from 1,460 to 1,800 students.

Since 1997, the Embassy of Japan in Ethiopia has supported over 270 Grassroots Human Security Projects such as education, water, agriculture, health and other human basic needs projects throughout Ethiopia. The Government of Japan has continued to support a variety of projects at the grassroots’ level for the marginalized and the vulnerable groups in the population.
