JAPAN SUPPORTS CONSTRUCTION OF NURSERIES FOR FOOD SECURITY IN GUDER, OROMIA

An Inauguration ceremony for a project funded through the Japanese Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) took place in Guder on Tuesday 6 July 2010.
Mr. Yoshiaki Ito, Minister and Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Japan, celebrated the completion of two nurseries, together with representatives of the West Shoa Zone, as well as members of the community.

The Project for Sustainable Management of Natural Resources and Promotion of Enset Development in Tokke Kutaya and Tikur Inchini Woreda, Oromia constructed two nurseries for enset, trees and fruits trees, provided seeds, maintenance fee for the nurseries, agricultural tools, study tour for farmers etc. and maintained a road to improve food security and manage natural resources in Tokke Kutaye Woreda and Tikur Inchini Woreda. The project was implemented by Volunteers Initiative for Aid and Development at the cost of USD 78,080.

In this project area, people have faced a lack of food due to soil erosion by heavy rain, deforestation by over-grazing, and population growth. Moreover, recent climate change has damaged agricultural productivity. For overcoming of these problems, this project was implemented with the dual purpose of environmental preservation and improving food security.

The Government of Japan has been supporting NGOs, Civil Societies, and Local Governments since 1989 in the effort towards realizing human security, especially for the most needy and vulnerable people. In this fiscal year from April 2010 to March 2011, GGP has planned to launch 20 projects in Ethiopia including education, water, health, agriculture and other human based projects.
