VISA SECTION GENERAL INFORMATION

Jurisdiction: The Visa Section of the Embassy of Japan in Ethiopia services applicants from Ethiopia. If you reside elsewhere, please apply to the appropriate foreign mission of Japan.
Office Hours: Visa applications may be submitted at the visa window from 08:30 am to 12:00 hrs and from 13:30 to 17:00 hrs, Monday through Friday, except selected holidays. You may normally reach someone in the Visa Section by telephone weekdays from 08:30 hrs to 12:00 hrs and from 13:30 to 17:00 hrs.
Location: The Visa Section is located in the Embassy of Japan, Addis Ababa Ethiopia.
Requirements and processing times for visa applications vary according to nationality, purpose of visit, and length of stay. If you already have a Certificate of Eligibility, please see the Visa Application with Certificate of Eligibility section.

CRITERIA FOR VISA ISSUANCE

 
In principle, a Japanese visa will be issued to an applicant when he/she meets all of the following requirements and the issuance is regarded as reasonable:
a) The applicant possesses a valid passport and is entitled for the re-entry to a country of which he/she is a national or citizen or a country of his/her residence.
b) All submitted documents shall be authentic, completed and satisfactory.
c) The activities to be engaged in while in Japan, or the civil status or the position of the applicant, and the period of stay shall meet the requirements for the status of residence and the period of stay stipulated in the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act* (Cabinet Order No.319 of 1951, hereinafter referred to as "the Act").
d) The applicant shall not fall under any of the items of Article 5, Paragraph 1 of the Act.

DEFINITIONS

   
Visa: a recommendation for entry in a foreign country issued by an embassy or consulate of that country; usually stamped into a passport.
Certificate of Eligibility (COE): a document issued by the Ministry of Justice in Japan which certifies that the holder has met the criteria established for a certain status of residence in Japan; a Certificate of Eligibility is obtained from an immigration office by a proxy (e.g., school, employer, relative) in Japan.
Passport: a document issued by the government of a country which identifies the holder as a national of that country.

Persons traveling to Japan may require permission to enter the country in the form of a visa. Requirements for visa application vary according to nationality, purpose of visit, and length of stay.

Instructor 1 or 3 years Language instruction and other education at primary and secondary schools
Professor 1 or 3 years Research or instruction as a professor or assistant professor at a university or equivalent educational institution
Researcher 1 or 3 years Research conducted on the basis of a contract with a public or private organization in Japan

Entertainer 3 months, 6 months, or 1 year Activities relating to the performing arts, sports or modeling
Artist 1 or 3 years Artistic activities that provide income, including work by a composer, song writer, painter, sculptor, crafts person, photographer, etc.
Journalist 1 or 3 years Journalistic activities conducted on the basis of a contract with a foreign journalistic organization
Legal/Accounting Services 1 or 3 years Activities of certified attorneys or public accountants
Medical Services 1 or 3 years Medical treatment by licensed physicians, dentists, and those with other medical qualifications
Skilled Labor 1 or 3 years Activities which require special industrial techniques or skills performed on the basis of a contract with an organization in Japan

Dependent 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, or 3 years Accompanying a spouse or parent who is working in Japan
College Student 1 or 2 years Study as an undergraduate at an accredited college or university
