Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan sends letter of thanks to
President Girma Woldegiorgis


Prime Minister of Japan H.E. Mr. Naoto Kan expressed his appreciation for the heartfelt encouragement and condolences offered earlier by the government and people of Ethiopia following the loss of lives and the destruction of property caused by the massive earthquake and tsunami which slammed Tohoku areas of the Pacific Ocean on 3.11.

Responding to a letter of condolences sent by H.E. Ato Girma Woldegiorgis, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia following the 3.11 earthquake and tsunami, H.E. Prime Minister Kan wrote in his letter: “The Government of Japan will make its utmost efforts, together with the people of the affected areas and the entire nation, to overcome this difficult time”.

While handing over the letter to H.E. President Girma Woldegiorgis, Japanese Ambassador H.E. Mr. Hiroyuki Kishino thanked H.E. President Girma for his comforting condolences when he visited his office on 20 April.

Briefing H.E. President Girma over the efforts being made by Government and people of Japan to rehabilitate the tsunami-hit areas, H.E. Ambassador Kishino said that the entire nation is now putting all efforts into relief and rehabilitation work.
H.E. Ambassador Kishino further noted that effort is also being made to restore control over the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, adding, precautionary measures are being taken to ensure food safety and human safety from radioactive contamination.

On 18 March 2011, H.E. President Girma signed a Book of Condolences on the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan at the Residence of the Ambassador of Japan in Addis Ababa.
