Girls’ Day (Hina Matsuri) Celebrated colorful

On the 23rd of March, following the first General Assembly of JEAS (Japan Ethiopia Alumni Society), the annual Japanese Girls’ Day Festival was celebrated colorfully at the residence of the Ambassador of Japan. The celebration was accompanied by a special piano performance given by the renowned artist, Girma Yifrashewa. “Tonight, I will play you music from Japan and Ethiopia which have amazingly absolute similarities”, Girma said.

Girma connected Japan, Europe and Ethiopia with his amazing performance that received a mesmerizing welcome from the audience. He played Debussy’s, Clair de lune (light of the moon), his own composition, Elilta (a vocal custom used by Ethiopians to express their deepest joy), and Japanese music for Girls’ Day - Hinamatsuri and Ue-womuite-arukou, better known as ‘sukiyaki song’    

There was also a tasting of the Japanese drinks sake, shochu and ume-shu, as well as the Ethiopian equivalents, areke and tejj.

The event was attended by the Ethiopian Minister of Culture and Tourism, Ato Amin Abdulkedir, Chief of Staff for the Chairperson of the African Union, Ambassador John K. Shinkaiye, Ethiopian business and academic leaders, members of the diplomatic corps and the media.
