On 14 May 2011, the 2nd General Assembly of the Japan Ethiopia Alumni Association (JEAS) deliberated on the Embassy of Japan’s (EOJ’s) yearly plan of Cultural and Grassroots Exchanges (CGE) and pledged to assist in the orientation given to MEXT scholarship winners, participate in the cultural programs of the Embassy and to help expand the offering of Japanese Language courses in other universities.
Participants of the Assembly agreed that JEAS’s participation in cultural activities will foster good relations between Ethiopia and Japan.
The Assembly also agreed to welcome officials and MPs of Japan when they arrive in Addis, to organize a platform for intellectual discussions and joint cultural performances of both countries; to organize a coffee ceremony side by side with a tea ceremony in the National Palace; and to support the expansion of Japanese Language Units (JLU) in other universities (currently the JLU is found only in Mekele University). In addition to cultural activities, the Assembly considered JEAS’s role in technology transfer; and to invite members of the Japanese companies in Ethiopia and Ethiopian businesses which have connections to Japan to join JEAS.
