On 4 and 5 October 2011, the Embassy of Japan together with the Japan Foundation presented ‘Blendrums’, a unique percussion performance, by renowned Japanese drummer Leonard Eto and his group of drummers and tap dancers, who visited Ethiopia as part of their ‘Blendrums’ East Africa Tour, 2011. The concert was held at the Ethiopian National Theatre.
Leonard is a renowned musician and performer and his music has been described as having “a luminous essence and primal joy transcending cultural barriers as one flows with the freedom manifested in the sound he creates”. (A.J. Hewat NYT).
In 1984, Leonard joined the Japanese Taiko drum group (KODO) and served as the principal player, organizer, music director as well as composer. One of the unique qualities that define Leonard’s artistic character is his exchanges with international artists which have taken him to over 35 countries.
He has performed with great musicians such as Bob Dylan, Bon Jovi and many other bands and artists. His music is widely appreciated and has been used in movies such as ‘JFK’, ‘The Lion King’ and ‘The Thin Red Line’, as well as various dance performances and the Olympics. Leonard’s original ensemble of Japanese drums has influenced not only Japanese music, but foreign performers such as ‘Stomp’ (a combination of percussion, movement and visual comedy), ‘Blue Man’ (theatrical shows and concerts featuring popular music) and others in the Western music scene.
Therefore, this concert presents a unique opportunity for musicians and the public alike to be inspired and transform their ideas of traditional and modern drumming and percussionists.
