On 17 March 2012, the Cultural Division of the Embassy of Japan and the Japanese Language Unit of the Mekelle University organized a Japanese Speech Contest among students of the Unit and people who lived in Japan, in four different categories (Basic, Advanced1, Advanced2 and Special Category for Alumni) at the Management Hall (Arid Campus) of the Mekelle University. The Dean of the College of Social Sciences and Languages of the Mekelle University, Dr. Gebreyesus Teklu opened the contest and pledged to expand the scale of the Japanese Language Unit from diploma to first degree level. Students from the advanced course spoke about their country, Ethiopia, and what they like about their home town. From the Special Category, alumni who lived in Japan spoke about what they love about Japan. All participants and winners were awarded certificates. Almost 20 candidates spoke at the speech contest. It is believed that the Japanese Language Unit will serve as a bridge to supply the burgeoning Ethiopian economy with multi-talented people who can easily understand the culture and language of Japan. The Japanese Language Unit was established at Mekelle University in 2008 with Assistance from the Japanese Government. In 2009, the Embassy of Japan celebrated a kick-off event in Mekelle to mark the start-up of the Unit. On 12 November 2011, under the Project to Supply Language Laboratory Equipment and Learning Materials, the Embassy of Japan donated language laboratory equipment and Japanese language learning materials which enabled the Mekelle University to provide a more comprehensive and in-depth Japanese language training program. |
