On 29 and 30 May 2012, the Embassy of Japan, with the support of the Japan Foundation organized a Japanese Kendo Demonstration (modern Japanese martial art of sword-fighting) performed by renowned Japanese Kendo specialists who visited Ethiopia.
In his opening remarks at the Italian Cultural Institute, H.E. Ambassador Hiroyuki Kishino said that Kendo developed as a beautiful and strong discipline of the warrior class of feudal Japan from which the culture has survived and practiced.
The objective of this event is to deepen the understanding of Japanese culture through Kendo (Japan’s most representative martial art). The central philosophy of Kendo emphasizes etiquette to encourage respect for partners and nurture people with a dignified and humane character. Vigorous training is placed on instruction in the spirit and forms of etiquette so that the practitioner can develop a modest attitude to life, and realize mutual understanding and betterment of humanity (the ideal of Kendo).

Kendo aims for unification of mind, spirit and technique by using the “shinai (bamboo)-sword”. It disciplines the human character through the application of the principles of the sword, and helps to mold the mind and body and cultivate a vigorous spirit.
Through correct and rigid training, Kendo also helps to develop esteem, human courtesy, sincerity and the cultivation of self. This enables practitioners to love their country and society, and promote peace and prosperity among all peoples.
The demonstration was attended by H.E. Ato Amin Abdelkadir, Minister of Culture, H.E. Ato Adamu Ayana, State Minster of Civil Service, Ambassadors, members of the diplomatic corps, friends of Japan and the media.
