On 9 November 2013, The Embassy of Japan together with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) organized a colorful 5th Annual Japan Festival at the Shalla Public Park in the Bole area.

The festival, under the motto “Discover Japan”, promoted Japanese culture and facilitated better understanding of Japan-related activities here in Ethiopia.

Visitors experienced Japanese culture such as Japanese calligraphy, origami, Japanese food, rice cake making, animation, Japanese tea ceremony, etc.

Different booths displayed activities of the Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) in science and math education, Kaizen projects, business promotion, tourism, infectious disease prevention, water supply, landslide prevention and agriculture.

The Japan-Ethiopia Alumni Society (JEAS), an association of Ethiopian students who studied in Japan with Monbushou Scholarships also explained to visitors on the gateway to study in Japan. Moreover, development assistance at the grassroots level financed by the Embassy of Japan, namely Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), was presented at the Embassy’s booth.

Stage presentations organized by the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers performed mesmerizing Japanese dance, songs, and demonstrations of martial arts.

The Japanese Embassy and JICA started to co-organize this festival in 2009.
