Mr. Yoshinori KITAMURA, First Secretary, Embassy of Japan in Ethiopia, celebrated the completion of the irrigation system, together with representatives of North Shoa Zone, as well as members of the community.
The Embassy of Japan supported construction of irrigation systems including drip irrigation and furrow irrigation, pond and river diversion system and night storages for double cropping in such areas where there is shortage of water. It also supported the construction of a spring capping, two hand dug wells and ten cattle troughs to produce safe water for local residents. This project offered 480 farmers training courses in horticulture and irrigation systems, and around 3,000 community members will be expected to benefit from this project.
This Project has been implemented by God for People Relief and Development Organization who has been working for improvement of rural livelihood since 1997, in collaboration with the local people who supported the project with their labor
The GGP scheme was first introduced in 1989, and it thus has a history of 21 years to date. In Ethiopia, since 1997, around 290 projects have been implemented under this scheme in such sectors as education, water supply, health services, food and the provision of other basic human needs. Since the construction of the Addis-Gohatsion-Dejen Trunk Road has started with Japan’s grant since 1999, the Embassy of Japan has been supporting several basic human needs projects including education, agriculture and water supply in areas where the road extends.
