On 23 August, 2013, Mr. Hajime KITAOKA, Minister and Chargé d'Affaire a.i. of the Embassy of Japan in Ethiopia, signed a Grant Contract for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) at the Embassy of Japan with the Manna Child Sponsorship Family Aid and Community Development Organization, represented by the Director, Ato Berhanu Kamisso. The amount of funding extended was USD 119,175.
Following the signing ceremony, the first for the GGP in the Japanese Fiscal Year 2013, Mr. Hajime KITAOKA remarked that all GGP projects are conducive to the empowerment of vulnerable and marginalized people and urged the project partner for timely implementation.
The project for the Construction of Bishan Guracha Secondary School in the West Arsi Zone, Oromia Regional State is to improve access to secondary education in the Bishan Guracha town by constructing a secondary school. Through this project, one classroom block and one block with a fully furnished laboratory, library and pedagogical center will be constructed so that about 600 students will have the opportunity to attend secondary school.
In 1989, Japan started the GGP in Ethiopia. Since 1997, when statistics were first collected, it has extended approximately US$ 26 million for 329 projects, which include schools, health posts, water supply and infrastructure (as of 23 August, 2013) .
Furthermore, the total amount the Embassy of Japan is planning to extend for GGP in the Japanese Fiscal year 2013 is approximately USD1.5 million.
