President Girma offers condolences to the entire people and Government of Japan |

The President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, H.E. Girma Woldegiorgis expressed his condolences today on behalf of the Ethiopian People and Government, on the loss of lives and the destruction of property caused by the massive earthquake and tsunami which slammed northern Japan and other areas on 11 March 2011. While attending the opening of a Book of Condolence on the earthquake and tsunami that hit north-east Japan at the Residence of the Ambassador of Japan in Addis Ababa, President Girma wrote, “at this time of National Tragedy, I would like to express my heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the people and Government of Japan and the bereaved families of the victims of this tragedy”. Meanwhile, religious leaders representing the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, the Ethiopian Catholic Church, the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs and the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus also expressed their condolences over the earthquake and tsunami that occurred in north east Japan last week. During a visit to the Embassy of Japan in Addis Ababa to deliver a letter of condolence to be given to H.E. Mr.Naoto Kan, the current Prime Minister of Japan, His Holiness Abune Paulos, Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, Archbishop of Axum Etchegue of the See of St. Teklehaimanot President of WCC and Honorary President of the World Religions for Peace said that no- one was untouched by the tragic situation that occurred in Japan. “Everybody is closely following what is going on in Japan, a country of hardworking and peace loving people”, His Holiness said. Abune Paulos further expressed sorrow for those who lost their lives and loved ones in the tragic event. He also said that he is hopeful that those affected by the earthquake and tsunami will recover from the ordeal soon. The religious leaders handed over a Letter of Condolence to Mr. Yoshiaki Ito, Minister and Deputy Head of Mission at the Japanese Embassy in Ethiopia. Mr. Ito on his part said that Japan has experienced a disaster that is shocking and of unimaginable scale. After thanking the religious leaders for sharing the sorrow of the Japanese people, Mr. Ito further said that the encouragement coming from various corners of the world gives those affected by the disaster good hope to recover from the pain. Metropolitan Archbishop of Addis Ababa President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Ethiopia, Abune Berhaneyesus Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council, Sheik Ahmedin Sheik Abdulahi Chello, Head of the EOC External Affairs Department, His Holiness Archbishop Dr. Abune Gerima, and Vice-President of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus, Reverend Dereje Jemberu participated in the condolence visit to the Embassy of Japan. |
