Two University lecturers hand over donation for Fukushima 50

Yonas Girma, a hydraulic engineer and lecturer at Hawassa University, handed 1100 Ethiopian Birr to the Embassy of Japan on 12 July 2011. The donation was meant to be given to the bereaved families of ‘Fukushima 50’, the unnamed 50 technicians who left behind to cool down the Fukushima power plant.

After handing over the money, Yonas said that the selfless commitment of the ‘Fukushima 50’ signified that the 21st century is not bare of real heroes who can tremendously impact the life of others by sacrificing themselves.

“We were extremely touched by their bravery and therefore, raised this small amount of money to unveil to the world that there are people here in Hawassa caring about their families”, Yonas told the Cultural Division of the Embassy of Japan.

Yonas and his Indian compatriot, Mr. M.U. Jagadish, collected the money by preparing and selling a 50 stared T-shirt to symbolize the unnamed 50 technicians who sacrificed themselves to cool down the Fukushima nuclear power plant, which was affected by the massive earthquake and tsunami that hit north eastern Japan last march.
