at the Inauguration Ceremony for the School Expansion Project in Gohatsion, Oromia on 25 November, 2010 | |||||
Ato Derge, Head of Education Office, North Shoa Zone, Ato Adere, Administrator of Werejarso Woreda, Ato Teshome, Mayor of Gohatsion Town Municipality, Ato Haile, Scool Director, Faculty members, Fellow students, Ladies and Gentlemen, I am most grateful to all of you for your very, very warm welcome today. I have never been received by such a large number of people in Ethiopia since I assumed my duty as the new Japanese ambassador about two months ago. This is a most pleasant duty for me to attend the inauguration ceremony of the expansion of the second-cycle primary school in Gohatsion, Oromia. This school project is the first grassroots grant-in-aid project I have ever inaugurated in Ethiopia and therefore a memorable one. Two new blocks with six classrooms and three administrative offices have now been built here. Desks and chairs have also been supplied. A block of dry latrines has been constructed as well. With these additional classrooms, the number of students per class will be reduced from the present average of 70 to 55, and excessive congestion in classrooms will be mitigated. The total number of students the school can enroll will be increased from 1673 to 1942, an opportunity for 269 more children to attend school. This is good news for students who were waiting for enrollment. As a whole, it is our pleasure that the educational environment in Gohatsion will be improved as a result of this project. Ladies and Gentlemen, Now let me pay tribute to the Gohatsion town municipality for its excellent management of this project, which has been completed on schedule and within its budgetary allocation. The communication with my staff in charge in the embassy was very good, I hear. You are a role model as a project partner in Japan’s grassroots grant-in-aid projects. The municipality has also made a great contribution to the construction of a multi-purpose hall at the school. It is also encouraging and commendable that people in the local community were actively involved in the school construction by providing their own labor. In this sense, this is a genuine community school which the entire community has built and supported. I hope that we can work together again for economic and social development of the area in the future. |
