Condolence message from H.E. Mr. Hiroyuki Kishino,
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ethiopia,
Permanent Representative to the African Union

22 August 2012

Your Excellency,

As the Ambassador of Japan to Ethiopia, I would like to express my profound sadness and shock on learning the news of the untimely demise of His Excellency, Ato Meles Zenawi, Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.  I would also like to convey the heartfelt condolences of the people and Government of Japan to the bereaved family of the Prime Minister and to the people and Government of Ethiopia on this sudden loss.
Prime Minister Meles’s achievements were many and his intellect formidable. He was renowned as a charismatic, visionary leader, playing an outstanding role in steering the development of Ethiopia towards a middle income economy, working for peace and stability in the Horn of Africa, leading the African Union (AU), in particular on African development and climate change, and speaking in various international meetings and conferences, representing the continent.

Japan most appreciates Prime Minister Meles’ strong support for the TICAD (Tokyo International Conference on African Development) process, which will mark its 20th anniversary next year.  Based upon his deep interest in Japan’s development experience, in 2008, Prime Minister Meles initiated policy dialogue for industrial development between Japan and Ethiopia, which is now in the second phase and showing great progress. The same is true of the kaizen initiatives, which are about to be applied nationwide.  Prime Minister Meles was a person who understood the genuine value of kaizen.

In another dimension, Prime Minister Meles demonstrated great solidarity with the people of Japan when we faced our own unprecedented natural disaster caused by the 3.11 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.  The initiative the Ethiopian Government spearheaded to collect donations from various quarters of Ethiopian society for the victims of the disaster was a great comfort and encouragement, touching all the people of Japan deeply.
We have been honoured to have received Prime Minister Meles in Japan five times and a sixth was being planned.  Under Prime Minister Meles’ leadership and initiative, the relations between Ethiopia and Japan were not only cemented but their scope of cooperation was broadened to an unparalleled level.  I strongly believe that we can continue to work together to further strengthen the already strong ties between our two countries, and I am always at your service to that end.

Prime Minister Meles leaves an enduring legacy and will be sorely missed.  May his soul rest in peace!

  Yours sincerely,

  Hiroyuki Kishino
